Il est conçu pour les systèmes de vision machine mais aussi utilisé pour d'autres applications de vision par ordinateur et certaines webcams. Bien qu'ils soient facilement confondus car ils fonctionnent tous deux sur FireWire, IIDC est différent et incompatible avec AV/C (Audio Video Control) utilisé pour contrôler les caméscopes et autres appareils vidéo grand public.
